Foliage, flotsam, knots and string — find out all about who we are

About us

Sarah Thatcher

Sarah Thatcher is the artistic creator behind Foliage and Flotsam. She has a degree in Fine Art and lives and works in South Wales, UK.

Since starting Foliage and Flotsam she has designed and produced many hundreds of macrame wall hangings, planters and other pieces which now adorn homes, offices and businesses across the globe. She specialises in collaborating with clients on bespoke commissions – working together to create something unique and special.

Pattern and symmetry with a hint of colour best describes Sarah’s signature style. Botanical images have been pared back to simple, minimalist, motifs which are then repeated to create an overarching design. She is influenced by the Art Nouveau decorative style, with the characteristic sinuous curves of plants and flowers, popular in interior design of the late 19th century, along with artists and designers, such as William Morris, from the British Arts & Crafts Movement of the same period, who created wonderful repeat pattern textiles and wallpapers filled with their formalised and stylised evocations of natural forms.

The origin of her fascination with patterns started in childhood when she was given dried beans, peas and lentils to play with and spent many hours happily absorbed in creating kaleidoscopic style decorations. Her love of patterns she partly gets from her mother who used to doodle when she was talking on the phone; by the end of a long conversation the note page would be densely covered with pencil embellished swirls, spirals, chevrons and all manner of geometric shapes.

Our commitment to the environment

All of our macrame pieces are made from a variety of cotton yarns. Although not always available, recycled and sustainably sourced cottons are used where possible. All wood used is from sustainable sources and we often use found materials, such as driftwood, in our pieces.

We’re committed to using sustainable, eco-friendly, packaging materials. All packing material used is either paper or cardboard and often we reuse packaging from other sources. All printed materials are produced on FSC certified paper using vegetable based inks. From time to time we do use a tiny bit of sellotape, but we’re always looking for more environmentally friendly solutions and ways we can improve.

What people say

“I can’t recommend Sarah highly enough! Honestly, she has magical hands, otherwise I can’t explain how I ended up with the most amazing macrame in the world. It was always a pleasure communicating with her, she kept me updated with photos through the entire process and the final product is even better than the photos. The packaging was really good and it arrived very quickly even in these difficult times. Thank you Sarah for your awesome work!”
